Las Fallas Festival in Valencia is one of the craziest fiesta’s in Spain, and this coming year we are running a holiday from the 16^th to the 17^st of March 2012. Spain is a country renowned for its unparalleled and crazy events. This started as a feast day for San Josepe, the patron saint of carpentry and has now developed into a 5 day long street party with many faces but mostly involving fire and fireworks.

Valencia is a quiet city of roughly 1 million people, but grows to almost 3 million when the pyrotechnic flame lovers arrive for the Las Fallas party. Las Fallas basically means “the fires” in valencian Spanish, and the main aim of the festival is the construction and burning of ninots (big puppets) alongside lots of alcohol and fireworks. Ninots are typically massive cardboard, paper mache statues, build to look very lifelike and depicting satirical characters and current celebrities – a lot make fun of TV personalities and corrupt Spanish politicians. Ninots costing up to thousands of euros, take almost the whole year to build, and many need cranes to mov e them to their festival site, ready for the first day of the festival (la plantà).

They remain in place across the 5 day duration with huge parties, music and bars everywhere whilst revellers rave and get drunk. On the final day (la cremà or the burning) little holes are chopped into the ninots and the puppets stuffed with fireworks – at midnight crowds sing, the streetlights turned off, and they are set on fire!
